DIGITAL TOOLS

Welcome to this page intended to provide you with some digital tools for your studies in physics. Much of your work will rely on simulations, modeling and data analysis. Having the right tools at your disposal is therefore crucial.

Here you will find a list of open source or free software that can enrich your learning and facilitate your research. 

For URN L1 Physics students (and others)

Draw

  • diagrams.net : diagram and team diagramming.

  • yEd graph editor : desktop application that can be used to quickly and effectively generate high-quality diagrams.

  • InKscape : Inkscape allows you to create vector drawings.

  • img2go : resize pictures (avoid 100 MB report files!)

  • LibreOffice Draw : Draw lets you produce anything from a quick sketch to a complex plan

  • gimp : image processing (photoshop alternative)

  • figma : design tool - collaborative - Professional plan: free for students and educators.

  • python - matplotlib: matplotlib is a comprehensive library for creating static, animated, and interactive visualizations in Python.

Capture

  • Engauge Dizitizer: The Engauge Digitizer tool accepts image files (like PNG, JPEG and TIFF) containing graphs, and recovers the data points from those graphs.

  • Webplotdigitizer : Extract data from plots, images, and maps

CAD

  • librecad : LibreCAD is a free Open Source CAD application for Windows, Apple and Linux.

  • freecad : 3D parametric modeler

  • salom : CAD, meshing, visualization

View

paraview : open-source, multi-platform data analysis and visualization application.

To write

  • Latex & Overleaf : LaTeX is a document preparation system used for the communication and publication of scientific documents.

  • mathpix snip : Convert images and PDFs to LaTeX, DOCX, Overleaf, Markdown, Excel, ChemDraw and more

  • LibreOffice (writer & impress & …): LibreOffice is a powerful and free office suite

  • Language Tool : grammar, style and spell checker (also in French)

  • scribus : InDesign alternative

  • Can go : presentation, CV, poster
